The Penalty is a forthcoming feature documentary (90-minutes) film examining the current state of America’s capital punishment system. Unravelling the tentacles of the death penalty, the film looks at the human cost of the ultimate punishment.
The filmmakers have been following Assistant Federal Public Defender for the Southern District of Ohio, CHU, Allen Bohnert through the execution of Dennis McGuire and Louisiana death row exoneree Damon Thibodeaux as he puts his life back together after wrongful conviction and exoneration.
Putting the stories into a national context, the film also features interviews with many experts in the field, including Debby Denno, Jeanne Woodford, David Dow, Kathryn Kase, Peter Neufeld, Dick Dieter, and Clive Stafford-Smith.
The filmmakers are currently fundraising for critical support to allow them to finish filming. The Kickstarter campaign is here if you’re able to lend support: bit.ly/PenKick
The director Will Francome and producer Laura Shacham will be at special events in New York (tomorrow, Wednesday 12th November) and in D.C. (Thursday 13th November) showing exclusive clips and discussing the film. The event in New York will also feature talks from Damien Echols and Vanessa Potkin, while in D.C. the filmmakers are joined by Ed Ungvarsky and Allen Bohnert. Official invites are attached here.
